Samar Island Institute of Medicine (SIIM): A Vision Realized for Samar Province

As the Samar Island Institute of Medicine (SIIM) prepares to open its doors in the academic year 2024-2025, the province of Samar stands on the brink of a historic educational milestone. The dream of establishing SIIM emerged during the pandemic, spearheaded by the courageous vision of then-President Marilyn D. Cardoso. Recognizing the critical need for a medical school to serve the province, she tasked Ronald Orale, the then Vice President for Research and Extension, with exploring the feasibility of this ambitious project. Read the full Feasibility study in this link.

The journey began with a comprehensive feasibility study, which was instrumental in identifying key areas of concern and formulating a strategic plan for the institute’s establishment. This study not only addressed logistical and financial considerations but also served as a vital tool in garnering support for SIIM’s approval from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The establishment of SIIM represents a significant leap forward for the province of Samar, addressing long-standing needs for accessible medical education and healthcare services. The institute aims to cultivate a new generation of medical professionals who will contribute to improving the health and well-being of their communities.

A landmark achievement for SIIM will be its inaugural class of 50 medical students. These pioneering students will make history as the first cohort to experience the unique educational environment that SIIM has to offer. Their journey through SIIM promises to be transformative, not only for their personal development but also for the broader community they will serve as future medical practitioners.

The commitment to excellence in medical education and community service is at the core of SIIM’s mission. By fostering a learning environment that emphasizes both academic rigor and practical experience, SIIM aims to produce highly skilled and compassionate medical professionals. The institute is designed to address the healthcare needs specific to Samar Province, preparing its graduates to tackle local and regional health challenges effectively.

The opening of SIIM also reflects a broader commitment to educational and social development within the region. By providing opportunities for local students to pursue medical careers without leaving their province, SIIM is poised to make a profound impact on both the healthcare system and the socio-economic landscape of Samar.

As SIIM prepares to welcome its first students, the anticipation and excitement within the community are palpable. The institute stands as a testament to the visionary leadership of President Cardoso, the dedication of Ronald Orale and his team, the innovative curriculum developed and spearheaded by the first ever Dean of SIIM Dr. Noel Espalardo and his team and the collective efforts of all those who have supported this initiative. With its doors set to open in SY 2024-2025, the Samar Island Institute of Medicine is not just a new academic institution but a beacon of hope and progress for Samar Province.
